About the Fellowship

The NHS Fellowship in Clinical AI invites applications for Cohort 5, running from August 2026 to August 2027. This prestigious program provides clinicians with hands-on experience in the safe deployment and evaluation of artificial intelligence (AI) within real-world clinical environments across the NHS.

Fellows will dedicate two days per week for 12 months, receiving salary cover while continuing their regular work or training. Participants are matched to active clinical AI projects supervised by experienced mentors in multidisciplinary teams, allowing them to gain direct, practical experience with cutting-edge healthcare technologies.

Fellowship Overview

The program is designed for energetic and forward-thinking clinicians who want to become leaders in clinical AI. Fellows will:

  • Work on live NHS clinical AI projects addressing real healthcare challenges.
  • Gain expertise in AI implementation, workflow integration, and evaluation.
  • Participate in a comprehensive teaching program aligned with the Clinical AI Curriculum.
  • Attend bespoke masterclass workshops hosted at leading NHS AI centres.
  • Receive support to publish and present research, including clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Join a growing network of Clinical AI Fellows and alumni driving digital innovation across healthcare.

  • 13 January 2026: Shortlisting outcomes and interview invitations
  • 20–27 January 2026: Remote interviews
  • February 2026: Fellowship matching and final selection
  • August 2026: Fellowship Cohort 5 begins

Eligibility

Applicants must be NHS clinicians who are:

  • Registered with one of the statutory professional bodies (HCPC, NMC, GPhC, GOC, GDC, or GMC).
  • Actively employed within the NHS.
  • Able to obtain Approval in Principle from a responsible person with authority over their training or employment pattern before applying.

There are three entry routes:

1. Nationally Funded Posts

  • Open to NHS clinicians across the UK.
  • Salary cover provided.
  • Competitive entry (shortlisting and interview required).
  • Some positions may require membership of the funding organisation.

2. Regionally Funded Posts

  • Available to clinicians from specific NHS regions.
  • Salary cover provided.
  • Competitive entry based on region-specific requirements.

3. Directly Allocated Posts

  • Applicants may identify a sponsor or self-fund.
  • Non-competitive entry (must meet essential criteria).
  • Open to any clinician providing NHS services.

Clinical AI Project Opportunities

Applicants will gain access to a range of AI projects during the recruitment cycle. These projects cover diverse areas of clinical innovation and may change as recruitment progresses. Final project options will be shared with shortlisted applicants during the matching stage.

Selection Process

Applications are assessed through a competitive shortlisting and interview process. Candidates are evaluated based on their clinical experience, motivation for AI integration, and alignment with program goals.

Applicants who progress will be matched with suitable AI projects within NHS institutions.

  2. Obtain Approval in Principle from your employing or training authority before submission.
  3. Deadline: 15 December 2025, 23:45 GMT

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
