The Mastercard Foundation Learning Partnership, in collaboration with Caribou Digital, invites applications for the Pan-African PhD Scholars Collective—an initiative designed to elevate the voices of African women researchers exploring AI’s role in shaping economic opportunities and digital transformation on the continent.

This unique program provides:
- Funding & Research Support – Scholars receive a $5,000 stipend for participation. Additional funding of up to $2,000 is available for travel, research, and editing.
- Mentorship & Career Development – Monthly peer-to-peer learning sessions and one-on-one mentorship from leading AI and gender scholars.
- Networking & Exposure – Opportunities to present at international conferences and collaborate with top researchers.
- Publication & Recognition – Guidance on publishing research in top academic journals and non-academic platforms, culminating in an edited volume in 2026.
- Leadership Opportunities – Become a thought leader in AI, digital policy, and innovation in Africa.
Who Should Apply?
This program is looking for seven outstanding African women scholars who:
Are African nationals or permanent residents enrolled in an English-speaking PhD program at an African university.
Are below the age of 40.
Have research interests in AI and the digital economy, including topics such as youth employment, innovation, and policy.
Are passionate about influencing AI policy and discussions in Africa.
Research Topics & Focus Areas
The program will support scholars in exploring AI’s impact on youth livelihoods and economic opportunities in Africa. Research areas may include:
- AI & Youth Employment – How does AI affect the transition from school to work?
- AI & Women’s Economic Empowerment – Can AI drive inclusive opportunities for African women?
- AI & Intersectionality – How does AI impact marginalized groups, including those with disabilities and those in rural areas?
- AI & The Future of Work – What will jobs in Africa look like in 2030 in an AI-driven economy?
- AI & Digital Entrepreneurship – How can AI support young African entrepreneurs and MSMEs?
- AI & Education – How is AI transforming skills development for youth, women, and underserved communities?
Program Timeline and Structure
Selection – A cohort of seven researchers will be chosen by April 2025.
Research & Mentorship – Monthly mentorship sessions, peer learning, and publication support.
Publishing & Conferences – Researchers will publish their findings and present at international conferences. The program will also support an edited volume on AI and inclusive digital economies in 2026.
Long-Term Impact – The network will explore ways to continue engagement beyond 2026.
