The Colin Powell Leadership Institute (CPLI) is a distinguished initiative created to honor the values and impact of General Colin L. Powell. Developed by Black Professionals in International Affairs (BPIA), the Institute prepares early and mid-career professionals to advance into influential positions across government, diplomacy, civil society, and the private sector.

Rather than simply offering training modules, the Colin Powell Leadership Institute provides a comprehensive environment for personal growth, professional advancement, and exposure to high-level decision-making spaces. Participants join a community inspired by service, ethical action, and global engagement.


Who Can Apply to the Colin Powell Leadership Institute

The program is ideal for professionals who aim to expand their strategic capability and increase their impact within their fields. While the Institute primarily serves candidates with several years of experience, applications from those outside this range may be considered individually.

Membership in Black Professionals in International Affairs (BPIA) is strongly encouraged, and applications are submitted through the BPIA Members-Only Portal.

Participants selected for the Colin Powell Leadership Institute gain access to a rich portfolio of development opportunities designed to enhance critical thinking, communication, and high-level problem-solving.

Professional Development Sessions

The Institute features intensive workshops led by senior practitioners from renowned institutions. These sessions address core foundations of effective influence, organizational strategy, and decision-making.

Salon-Style Executive Dinners

Cohort members engage in small-group conversations with ambassadors, diplomats, national security experts, and senior public servants. These dialogues explore themes such as navigating complex environments, crisis response, career acceleration, and global collaboration.

Media and Communications Training

The Colin Powell Leadership Institute equips participants with tools to communicate with clarity and confidence. Workshops include op-ed writing, crisis communication, and preparing for public visibility led by respected editors and communication strategists.

Policy Engagement and Exposure

There is no cost to join the Colin Powell Leadership Institute.
