Applications for the 2024-2025 DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships is now open. The Scholarship aims to foster strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related Master’s or doctoral studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), as a publicly funded, self-governing organization of the institutions of higher education in Germany, promotes international academic exchange as well as educational cooperation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programs.
The target group for this scholarship program is graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Sahara Africa with a first academic degree if applying for a Master’s program, or with a Master’s degree if applying for a doctoral program who want to pursue Master’s or PhD courses in their home country (In-Country scholarships) or in another Sub-Sahara African country (In-Region scholarships).

DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships Benefits
The DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships Program will offer selected candidates the following Benefits:
- Tuition fees
- Study and research allowance
- Printing allowance
- Monthly Scholarship (Accommodation, Food etc.)
- Travel allowance (In-Region scholarship holders only)
- Health Insurance (In-Region scholarship holders only)
Additional benefits
DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarship holders are also encouraged to apply for a research stay in Germany for 3 up to 6 months. The short-term research scholarship includes:
- a monthly scholarship payment for living costs
- health/accident/personal liability insurance
- a flat-rate travel allowance
DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarship holders are also
- invited to apply for different Summer Schools in Germany (four weeks)
- invited to participate in further training possibilities such as E-Resources and/or soft Skill trainings.

DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships Eligibility
In order to apply for the DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria.
- must be nationals or permanent resident of a Sub-Sahara African country
- be a graduates with a first academic degree, who have successfully completed a three-year university degree with above average results (at least: Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent, if applicable) Candidates who cannot provide a Second Class/Upper Division or a higher result are not eligible
- clearly show motivation and strong commitment
- have thorough knowledge of the language of instruction
- have completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application
- should generally be
- staff member of a public university,
- candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment,
- from the public sector or
- Alumni of the DAFI-programme. Fresh graduates, professionals and other candidates who do not fit in the above mentioned areas are also invited to apply for the programme.
NB: Female applicants, refugees with recognized refugee status and candidates from other less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the programme.

How to Apply for DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships
Interested applicants who would like to apply for this government scholarship must click on the program they wish to apply for. Please click on the corresponding link to download the PDF file of the call and follow the given instructions to submit your application.
In general the following documents are needed:
- DAAD online application form (available on the DAAD portal under Application → Fill in Form) duly filled in and submitted according to the outlined deadline. Important information as regards Question 7 in the application form: If you cannot find your university/institution in the dropdown menu, please click on ‘other institution’, and enter it manually.
- A full curriculum vitae in tabular form, if not otherwise possible without a signature.
- A list of publications (if applicable).
- One recent recommendation letter from and signed by a university teacher(s) (which provides information about your qualifications). Please read the instructions provided on the tab ‘General Information on the Application via DAAD Portal/This is What You Have To Do’.
- Letter of admission from the host university (this can be subsequently submitted before the scholarship begins if it is not available at the time of application).
- Certified copies of university degree certificates including transcripts (if available, including a grading scale for the final university degree and if available, information on the recognition of the university degree certificates in the host country) to be uploaded under “university degree certificated” in the DAAD portal.
- Letter of motivation (1-2 pages with a personal, social motivation as well as a motivation for the studies and a possible Master project). Please upload the letter of motivation under “study project/motivation” in the DAAD portal.
- Copy of your passport or, if not applicable, a copy of your National Identification Card.
- If applicable, information on the UNHCR registration as refugee.
Optional:
- Additional documents that might be relevant for your application (e.g. proof of internship, proof of employment).
- A semester schedule or/and timetable (if applicable: mentioning the planned research stay in Germany, see “Additional benefits”)
