The Faculty of Science (FNWI) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is inviting applications for the Global South Fellowship Scheme 2026. This prestigious fellowship offers talented scientists from the Global South the opportunity to conduct collaborative research at one of Europe’s leading academic institutions.
The initiative aims to foster global scientific exchange, promote diversity, and strengthen research partnerships between the University of Amsterdam and institutions in developing countries.
About the Fellowship
The Global South Fellowship Scheme provides four visiting fellowships for researchers from developing nations to spend several months at the Faculty of Science. Fellows will collaborate closely with UvA scientists, engage in interdisciplinary projects, and contribute to advancing research in their respective fields.
One fellowship is co-sponsored by the Dutch Institute for Emergent Phenomena (DIEP) and another by CIMPA, with specific thematic focuses in emergent phenomena and mathematics, respectively.
Fellowship Benefits
Successful fellows will receive:
- A €10,000 grant to cover travel, visa, and accommodation costs in Amsterdam
- Access to office space and research facilities within the Faculty of Science
- Integration into a vibrant research community with opportunities for collaboration and mentorship
- Interaction with interdisciplinary networks, such as the UvA Institute for Advanced Study and the Dutch Institute for Emergent Phenomena
The fellowship has a minimum duration of two months, with the possibility of extension depending on mutual agreement with the host institute.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of, and employed by, a university or research institution in a country classified as developing by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).
- Have a confirmed co-applicant from the Faculty of Science (FNWI) at the University of Amsterdam, at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.
- Hold an employment contract or scholarship agreement at their home institution for the entire duration of the fellowship.
- Be at any career stage — including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, or academic staff — with a strong curiosity and collaborative mindset.
Expectations from Fellows
Fellows are expected to:
- Be present at the Faculty of Science at least three days per week.
- Collaborate actively with their UvA co-applicant and the broader FNWI research community.
- Deliver an opening presentation and participate in Global South Plan events.
- Submit a final report (co-authored with the UvA co-applicant) summarizing fellowship outcomes and outlining future collaboration opportunities.
Selection Process
Only four fellowships will be awarded in this pilot edition. Selection will be based on:
- Academic track record and research potential
- Experience in international collaboration
- Alignment with DIEP or CIMPA thematic areas (for two of the fellowships)
- Diversity in research fields, gender balance, and career stage distribution
Priority will be given to applicants with extended collaboration agreements with their host institutes.
