Brief description:

The Victoria University of Wellington is making available the Tongarewa Scholarship to celebrate the University’s commitment to its international student community. Eligible applicants are those either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree programme at Victoria University of Wellington. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.

Up to 10 scholarships of NZ$10,000 for Bachelors and Masters degrees and up to 9 scholarships of NZ$5,000 for Masters degrees only.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarships range from NZ$5,000 to NZ$10,000. This is a partial fee-based scholarship that will be paid towards your tuition fees for 1 year of study.

Recipients of the Scholarship are guaranteed an offer of a place in the Halls of Residence, provided an accommodation application is received by the Accommodation Service by the required deadline.

Applicants must be commencing international students who are paying full international fees and are either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Postgraduate academic requirements

For entry into postgraduate study, you will need the equivalent of a Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree from a recognised institution with at least a B- average.

Postgraduate programmes include Graduate Diplomas, Honour’s degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Master’s degrees. For PhD study, you need to meet the PhD entry requirements. You should contact the Faculty of Graduate Research with any questions about applying.

A background in a particular subject area may be required or recommended. Entry is at the programme director’s discretion. For more information, check the requirements tab on your chosen degree page before you apply.

Postgraduate English requirements

You will need to show us proof that you meet the entry requirements for your chosen programme.

When you apply, you need to provide certified copies of your original documents. If your documents aren’t in English, you’ll also need to provide certified translations.

  • You’ll need a personal email address to start your online application.
  • You’ll need to know what you want to study (your degree or programme) and when you want to start studying (the year and trimester) before you start your application.

Applying as a New Zealand secondary school student

Applying to do a PhD or research Master’s degree

To apply for a research Master’s degree or doctoral programme, you need to apply through the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research.

Applying for Foundation Studies

The Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Programme is taught exclusively through UP International College New Zealand. Apply via the UP Education website.

Applications by agents

What happens next

Wait for confirmation

We will send you an email to confirm we have received your application. We’ll then email you to confirm whether your application is successful, usually within one week (undergraduate) or three to four weeks (postgraduate). Some programmes may take longer to assess due to interview, thesis, and audition requirements.

Accept your Offer

If you are accepted to study at Victoria University of Wellington, we will email you an Offer of Place letter. This guarantees your entry into your chosen degree or programme, once you have met any conditions of your Offer. You can accept your Offer online.

Scholarship Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

To apply, you must submit a completed online application before the deadline.  The scholarship application deadlines are 1 June 2023 for (Trimester 2, 2023), 1 September 2023 (Trimester 3, 2023) and 30 November 2023 for (Trimester 1, 2024).
