Call for Proposals: Innovative Tech for Water Security

Mercy Corps Ventures (MCV) has launched its third call for proposals under the Climate Venture Lab, committing up to $1 million to pilot first-of-a-kind (FOAK) solutions addressing climate resilience. This initiative focuses on empowering vulnerable communities across Africa, Asia, and Latin America by enhancing water security.

Why Water Security Matters

The world is in the midst of a water crisis:

  • 4 billion people face severe water scarcity annually.
  • By 2030, an estimated 700 million people could be displaced due to water scarcity. Emerging markets—particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America—are most vulnerable due to less resilient infrastructure and rapidly growing populations.

Climate change is compounding these challenges, disrupting freshwater availability and intensifying natural disasters like droughts, floods, and extreme rainfall. Despite these obstacles, technology offers transformative opportunities to improve water efficiency, access, conservation, and safety.

What We’re Looking For

Mercy Corps Ventures seeks innovative, scalable solutions that address one or more of the following areas:

  • Increasing Water Supply Examples: Rainwater harvesting, desalination, wastewater recycling, boreholes, etc.
  • Optimizing Water Demand Examples: Smart irrigation, water efficiency tools, and nature-based conservation systems.
  • Strengthening Infrastructure Examples: Water storage, treatment solutions, and reducing network losses.

What Selected Partners Receive

Mercy Corps Ventures will provide:

  • Equity-free grants of up to $50,000 per partner.
  • Mentorship and impact measurement advisory.
  • Access to partnership opportunities, knowledge exchange, and brand exposure.

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Impact: How will the solution benefit low-income or underserved populations?
  • Innovation: Is the solution transformative and truly first-of-a-kind?
  • Traction & Team: Does the team have the capacity and track record to deliver?
  • Scalability: Can the solution be replicated and scaled effectively?

Important Dates

  • Info Session: April 10, 2025, at 8:00 am Mexico Time.
  • Deadline to Apply: May 2, 2025.
